Argues that sex crimes are rarely sexually motivated. Rather, the offender is in a state of identity loss, in panic, or in a chaotic condition and seeks release from this intolerable derangement of his psychic equilibrium. The author describes a treatment program that incorporates relatives, parents, or spouses of the offender and aims to instill self-confidence, the ability to handle distance and proximity, and the ability of the offender to trust himself and others. A follow-up study of 170 patients 2 yrs after release from prison revealed that 58 had relapsed, with rapists having a relapse rate of 9%, pedophiles, 51%, and exhibitionists, 75%.
