A behavior modification training program was tested using 60 inmates incarcerated at a medium security prison located in the New York City area. The program, developed by Cheek (1977) was examined so as to ascertain its applicability to the prison system in terms of reducing the tension and stress level. The premise of the program is that through increased awareness of one''s self control mechanisms, an individual can reduce his stress level and thereby interact with others in a more appropriate fashion. The total program encompassed different therapeutic modalities which were investigated so as to ascertain the effect that components had on the total process. The four components are as follows: (1) Relaxation training; (2) Relaxation training in conjunction with systematic desensitization; (3) Proper assertiveness and communication; (4) Positive self-image.
