Reported a process evaluation of a group treatment component designed to enhance offender empathy for sexual abuse survivors. The intervention employed cognitive, affective, and behavioral procedures and was used within the context of a comprehensive residential treatment program for sex offenders. 20 men (10 pedophiles and 10 rapists) participated. Prior to the 1st and immediately after the last sessions of the empathy group, Ss were administered the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Abel's Cognitive Distortions Scale, Burt's Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, the Generalized Expectancy for Success Scale, the Selfism Scale, and the Splitting Scale. The intervention resulted in increased empathetic skills, decreased endorsement of cognitive distortions predisposing child sexual abuse, decreased expectation of being able to attain one's goals, and at least a limited indication of decreased use of narcissistic defenses.
