Studied the effects of job skills training on recidivism in 101 offenders who had received vocational training in the years 1977, 1978, and 1979 at a detention center and in their matched controls who had not received vocational training. Based on the available data, the findings suggest no quantifiable difference in employment success between trainees and nontrainees. Job placement in and of itself does not have a significant bearing on employment success. Job placement appears to make a difference only if it is training related. It is recommended that a greater emphasis be placed on job development and placement of trainees in jobs for which they are trained. It is also important that higher paying jobs for trainees be developed. A comprehensive program would also assist trainees with the purchase of needed job related equipment such as tools and attire and thus facilitate training related placement.
