40 incarcerated drunk drivers (aged 21-65 yrs) and 62 drug offenders were treated with moral reconation therapy (enhancement of positive ego; social, moral, and behavioral growth) and concurrently assessed with respect to levels of moral reasoning, their perceived purpose in life, and subsequent recidivism. Analysis showed that, as Ss progressed in the program, levels of moral reasoning and purpose in life increased significantly. Level of moral reasoning appeared to increase with Ss' completion of therapeutic steps. Follow-up with regard to recidivism is discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
