Queen’s School of Rehabilitation Therapy is pleased to announce that, with support from the Principal’s Development Fund, it will host Dr. Rory Cooper as a Visiting Scholar in April, 2015.
Dr. Cooper is FISA & Paralyzed Veterans of America Chair and Distinguished Professor of the Department of Rehabilitation Science & Technology, and professor of Bioengineering, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, Dr. Cooper is Founding Director and VA Senior Research Career Scientist of the Human Engineering Research Laboratories, a VA Rehabilitation R&D Center of Excellence in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh; he is also Co-Director of the National Science Foundation Quality of Life Technology Engineering Research Center, a joint effort between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. As part of the visit Dr. Cooper will be delivering a public lecture entitled, “Assistive Technology – The Key to Successful Re/Integration.”
Assistive technology is one of the most effective means of leveraging a person’s function and promoting community participation. Dr. Cooper will discuss recent advances in assistive technology research, development and technology transfer at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories. These will include robotics, wheelchairs, wearable systems, and intelligent systems. Dr. Cooper will also provide an overview of international efforts to improve access to wheelchairs and employment for people with disabilities.
