Examined the needs of life sentence prisoners in England and Wales, in relation to groups aimed at providing information, support, or treatment for offending behavior at the 3 main phases of the sentence. Based on a survey of 37 prison establishments, currently available groupwork for life sentence prisoners includes both information-based and supportive groups for early sentence, newly-sentenced, mid-sentence, and prerelease stage prisoners. Description of these groups as they address a requirement that life sentence prisoners focus on offending behavior before they progress towards release concludes with the suggestion that, while there are some prisons that provide well for life prisoners on the 3 key areas of information, support, and treatment, these are relatively few and tend to be prisons that specialize in life sentence management. This highlights a need for awareness of life sentence prisoners' needs for groupwork programs. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
